A system called ScoutSpot has just gone live in America, and it works by text message. When a driver is about to leave a space, he notifies a central computer via his mobile. It texts other nearby motorists to say that there"s a vacancy, and invites bids.

The auction winner is directed to the location, and the departing driver and the firm split the value of the bid between them.
