A team from roads contractor Mott MacDonald was working in the area, and was told to keep an eye out for the toy. Amazingly, 18 days later the bear was spotted by one of the workmen, and he was returned to his rightful owner. "I am extremely pleased to have him back," said the man, who asked not to be named. Pictured with bear and bike is Alex Skinner, a member of the crew that found him.

While the overall dimensions...

While the overall dimensions look to have remained similar, a higher bonnet line will ensure the newcomer meets the latest pedestrian impact regulations. The existing C-Class"s twin headlamps make way for more conservative units, but an S-Class-style rising waistline adds character. The car debuts at next March"s Geneva Motor Show.

Autotuning

According to our spies...

According to our spies, Vauxhall"s VXR performance brand is putting the final touches to a diesel-powered version of the range-topping Astra.

The derv variant has been spotted testing at the famous Nürburgring track in Germany, where its distinctive engine note set it apart from the petrol model.

Power for the newcomer is expected to come from a highly tuned version of the firm"s 1.9-litre CDTI unit, featuring a pair of turbochargers to bring its output to a potent 212bhp.

The same motor is also set to see service in the hot Vectra and is expected to power the forthcoming Antara SUV, too.

As with the petrol variant, the diesel Astra will have a full bodykit and come as a three-door only - even though the test mule has five. Meanwhile, the current VXR"s stiff suspen-sion will ensure it remains the most extreme hot hatch around.

However, Astra fans will have to wait for the powerful diesel, because it isn"t likely to arrive until late 2007 at the earliest - probably after the car"s mid-life facelift. The sporty Vectra is on the cards to appear first, and its debut is expected to take place during the Geneva Motor Show next year.
