A system called ScoutSpot has just gone live in America, and it works by text message. When a driver is about to leave a space, he notifies a central computer via his mobile. It texts other nearby motorists to say that there"s a vacancy, and invites bids.

Although very much at...

Although very much at the planning stage at present, the new version could prove popular with British buyers who snapped up the Clio Cup when it hit UK showrooms in late 2002. That model was very much a stripped-out, lightweight racer, which did away with luxuries such as air-conditioning.

However, the French manufacturer has said that a M탩gane Cup would be nowhere near as basic and would still offer a wide variety of options. The Renaultsport M탩gane"s performance figures - 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds and 147mph top speed - are unlikely to change for the Cup edition, either, as engineers are said to be more interested in improving the car"s dynamics. A Renault UK spokesman was reluctant to elaborate on the plans. He told Auto Express: "British buyers want better handling, switchable traction control and additional performance focus, without losing extras and comfort. If a Cup version does come to these shores, it could possibly be in the form of an options upgrade."
