As the wraps were taken...
As the wraps were taken off in the Spanish capital, the new car"s more distinctive lights and a grille inspired by those on the Yaris were clear to see. A subtle bumper design and fresh door mirrors with indicator repeaters also feature.
While the visual alterations err on the side of caution, there are some important changes under the skin, as two new engines join the line-up.
Out goes the current 2.0-litre D-4D, replaced by an updated 130bhp derv powerplant. But diesel fans will be more interested in the T180 flagship, which uses the same 175bhp 2.2-litre D-4D unit as the new RAV4. It takes the Avensis from 0-60mph in 8.6 seconds, yet offers 46mpg fuel economy.
Improved ride and handling, along with sharper steering, are also on the cards, thanks to suspension upgrades. The saloon, hatchback and estate all hit UK showrooms at the beginning of July, costing from around ÷£15,000.
