Roadchef, one of the UK"s biggest service area operators, is to be rebranded as Roadchef Costa Coffee. And it has called for a change in the law which regulates roadside selling. At present, sites can"t advertise what food and drink they sell. Roadchef says that if it was able to do so, more people would stop, boosting profits - and safety. Chief executive Martin Grant said: "Life has changed since the Fifties, yet service stations have not. We want to provide the range of choice seen on the high street."

Meet the latest British hero, the MMI Avocet. The sports car has a light body and a chassis developed by Ray Mallock – the man who prepares Chevrolet’s World Touring race cars. It features a 2.0-litre Ford engine, delivering either 150bhp or 225bhp, with the latter good for a 0-60mph time under five seconds. The models cost ÷£25,000 and ÷£28,000, and MMI plans to build 50 cars a year at its Essex factory.

Asda, favoured by frugal fuel shoppers, has slashed its litre price across 167 supermarket forecourts. Motorists filling up with unleaded can now expect to pay 85.9p, down 0.2p.

Additionally, 1.5p has been knocked off diesel, putting it at 89.9p per litre. That"s the lowest in a year says the firm, claiming that a mild winter with reduced demand for oil made the cuts possible.
