The equipment gave an audible warning whenever they went over that mark. According to the results, a constant reminder of the legal boundary encouraged drivers to stay within the law, whereas without it, they often exceeded the limit.
The Dutch-based scientists found two more safety benefits of the display, which could become a feature in future cars: drivers stayed further back from vehicles they were following - and they changed lanes less.
