Vauxhall and Ford have...

Vauxhall and Ford have had the same two models in the top 10 chart at either end of the 10-year period - the griffin"s Astra and Corsa and the blue oval"s Fiesta and Mondeo. French firm Renault has also enjoyed consistent success with its Clio. But it was Ford"s Escort, and its successor, the Focus, that took top spot in both eras.

If I was asked to nominate...

If I was asked to nominate the most damning, scary and revealing motor industry article I"ve read all year, it would be the one my trembling hands tore from a leading American business magazine a little over a week ago. Among other things, the story said that Ford was in a mess. It"s hurting like never before. Unless things change big time, it is going down the tubes. And there"s more. Much more. At the wheel of the enterprise that has just lost .8billion (£3billion) in its last, dismal three-month accounting period, is Alan Mulally, whose corporation is forecast to burn another bn (£1.6bn) cash in the next quarter.

That’s because...

That’s because the materials now used to build them are intended to bounce back into shape after an impact – and this can conceal the true effects of a collision. As a result, owners could be driving round in potentially unsafe vehicles desperately in need of a serious repair.

Called the Tandem -...

Called the Tandem - because the driver and passenger ride in line - it"s being developed by Volvo. The layout has been chosen because the Swedish company believes the future will be geared around narrow cars that can make the most of lane space on congested commuter routes.

Auto Express had the opportunity to drive a prototype, and project leader Doug Frasher told us that this was just the beginning. "We envisage a family of cars like this. We want it to change the way the world thinks about vehicle ownership," he explained.

Frasher used the example of the Sony Walkman, highlighting how it revolutionised the personal audio industry. Despite its compact dimensions, the Tandem promises to be safe. The gullwing doors have space for side airbags and beams, while the engine will be in the rear, allowing the front end to be a deformable structure. Tandem tested here
