The figures reveal that a switch by 20 percent of motorists in the capital would save the equivalent weight of 4 Big Ben towers in pollution. To push the message home, Honda has launched a "No Choke" campaign to highlight the need for greener cars in London - cars like its own Civic Hybrid, launched earlier this year.

Due in 2008, the new Fabia - currently the firm"s most popular model - is likely to gain the Roomster"s large, feline headlights and multi-slat grille with chrome surround. The overall look is more rounded than on the current model, which was introduced in 1999.

With more than 1.3 million sold in the past seven years, the Fabia has been largely responsible for the firm"s resurgence. Currently, three versions are available: hatchback, estate and saloon.

Officials said the Roomster"s modular platform, featuring components from the existing Fabia and the Octavia MkI and II, may eventually be used elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group. This gives SEAT, Audi and VW the option of building similar models. Likewise, the mini-MPV"s innovative VarioFlex rear seating system, with its 20 different combinations, will also probably appear elsewhere on VW Group models.

Prices for the Roomster - which will rival the Ford C-MAX and Vauxhall Meriva - won"t be announced until August.
