RAC Trackstar boss Pat Gallagher said: "Car security is getting better, so it"s not surprising thieves are using different methods. This type of fraud often happens on high-value vehicles, so the financial impact is greater." Gallagher added that fraudulent transactions were more likely to happen after 5pm, when the banks have shut and the seller can"t check the draft"s authenticity.

First up is the new Land Rover Freelander, which has been spied testing with a light disguise for the first time. And for those with a bigger budget, we"ve exclusive details of Mercedes" plans for a baby M-Class, too.

But it"s the new Land Rover that"s likely to attract more buyers, and there"s great news for fans - speculation is rife that it will be unveiled at the British Motor Show in London in July 2006.

Auto Express can reveal it will be based on Ford"s next-generation Mondeo platform, not that of the latest Focus as previously thought. As a result, the three-door Freelander will be dropped, giving buyers the option of a five-door only. The underpinnings will be used for Volvo"s forthcoming XC50 4x4, too.

The new car"s styling is closely based on the existing model. The flat bonnet and trademark headlamps are familiar Freelander cues, but the slab-sided design, square edges and side vents are from the larger Discovery.

Engines are shared with other Ford-owned firms, and the range will include new diesel and petrol units. A basic form of the Disco"s Terrain Response system will ensure good off-road ability.

The SUV is set to go on sale before the end of 2006. Prices have yet to be finalised, but as part of a move upmarket it"s likely to cost more than the current car.
