Flash, fun and four-wheel...

Flash, fun and four-wheel drive ò€“ BMW claims to have created an all-new class of cars with the X6, which it is billing as the worldò€™s very first Sports Activity Vehicle. And the model has one aim: to be the best-handling, most desirable off-roader on the market.

The familiar grille and bold creases in the bodywork create a clear family resemblance to the more traditional X5. But the high waist, shallow side windows and plunging roofline cut a much sportier silhouette. The short overhangs, high rear haunches and vast one-piece hatchback will be among its most talked about features.

The originality continues in the cockpit, too, where coupé-like luxury blends with the commanding stance of an off-roader. A paddleshift gearbox is standard, as are electric front seats, but sculpted padding on the rear bench makes it strictly a four-seater.

With such a strong focus on driving pleasure, itò€™s no surprise that the X6 will be the first BMW to feature its Dynamic Performance Control. The system works in unison with the proven xDrive technology to split torque between the front and rear axles and also send instantaneous power to the wheel with most grip.

The flagshipò€™s 4.8-litre engine is a 401bhp tuned version of the V8 from the X5. Other choices include a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six with 302bhp, and two 3.0-litre diesels with either 282bhp or 232bhp. A hybrid version of the X6 is on the way for 2009, but the rest of the range will be available from April, with prices starting from around Ò£45,000.
