Faster, greener and sleeker... Lexus has revised its flagship V8-powered GS executive car by giving it a new engine – as well as updating the styling across the range.
In response to competition...
In response to competition from Bugatti"s Veyron, the German firm has created its ultimate driver"s model - the SLR 722 Edition. Paying homage to the classic Mercedes 300 SLR driven by Stirling Moss at the Mille Miglia race in 1955, the 722 tag refers to the number on the famous car.
Engineers have tweaked the SLR"s 5.5-litre supercharged V8 powerplant to produce an extra 24bhp, taking the total to 641bhp. The engine powers the rear wheels, allowing the 722 Edition to do 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds - 0.2 seconds quicker than the standard car.
Improving a car"s performance above 200mph is a major challenge for technicians, so the SLR"s increased horsepower only lifts the maximum pace from 207.5mph to 209.4mph. While the standard SLR is priced at ÷£317,610, the 722 Edition will be available for around ÷£340,000 when it goes on sale in the UK next month.
But not just anyone will be allowed to get their hands on the range-topper. Test drives will only go to members of the SLR Club, which is open to those drivers who already own the exclusive Mercedes McLaren supercar.
