It"s the car that will make Toyota cool ò€“ so says company boss Akio Toyoda. As he took the wraps off the FT-86 ò€“ the eagerly awaited replacement for the Celica ò€“ at the Tokyo Motor Show, he claimed sporty models such as the rear-driven coupé will change his firmò€™s image.

Perhaps we should ignore car disposal schemes, hold on to our old bangers and just not drive them much!

The most eagerly anticipated fast Ford for years made its global debut at the British Motor Show today. The Focus RS is powered by a 296bhp version of the 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged engine from the Focus ST, making the new RS the most powerful model Ford of Europe has ever produced. No official performance figures are available yet, but Ford RS boss Jost Capito estimated a 0-60mph time of less than six seconds. Top speed is likely to exceed 150mph.

It is inspired by the X-Treme, a mini sport utility concept which we brought you exclusive first pictures of at lastí‚á  December"s Bologna Motor Show.

Standard C3 lines are beefed up with robust, black plastic bumpers, flared arches and thicker side skirts. These are complemented by a black grille, integrated roof rails and an alloy-look finish to the foglamps and lower rear end.

Although European models will have a limited-slip differential and a 30mm raised suspension to back up the 4x4 styling, right-hand-drive cars will be limited to cosmetic upgrades. Citroen UK says that although the makeover will give the range an injection of "attitude" and enhance its appeal to young male drivers, the firm doesn"t believe there will be much demand in Britain for mech- anical upgrades. In addition, it wants to keep pricing as low as possible.

The X-TR will use the C3"s 90bhp 1.4 and 110bhp 1.6 petrol engines, as well as a 92bhp 1.4 HDi turbodiesel, mated to five-speed manual or SensoDrive semi-auto boxes. It will get high standard spec including four airbags, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, air-con, CD and central locking. Prices aren"t yet confirmed, but expect the range to kick off at í‚á£11,750 for the 1.4 petrol and rise to around í‚á£14,000 for the flagship 1.4 turbodiesel.
