When the motor show comes to town, Detroit really starts to live up to its Motor City nickname. Ford is naturally big news at the US expo, and this year’s press conference was just as spectacular as ever.

Making its debut at next March"s Geneva Motor Show, the roadster will have a fully automatic folding fabric roof - unlike the drop-top Murci탩lago. The newcomer"s electro-hydraulic hood retracts neatly at the touch of a button, and sits beneath a flush-fitting cover on the Spyder"s slightly redesigned rear end. The car will go on sale here next summer, priced from around í‚á£130,000. It will be powered by the same 500bhp 5.0-litre V10 as is found in the coup탩.

The ex-Williams and Jaguar F1 driver will race for the team owned by Renault star Giancarlo Fisichella. “This is a chance to remind everyone that I am always competitive,” said the Brazilian. “I want to return to F1 as soon as I can, which is why I have accepted this challenge.”

It"s the car GM bosses hope will give Hummer sales a much-needed boost, following a downturn in the US. And despite engineers" best attempts to disguise the newcomer as a pick-up, the rear end is geared towards family use.

The H3 will be powered by a new 4.3-litre straight-six engine delivering 260bhp. It goes on sale next year and will cost the equivalent of í‚á£20,000 in the US. General Motors has no plans to bring it here, but expect to see some coming to Britain through specialist importers, priced at around í‚á£30,000.
