Luxury finishes on mainstream...

Luxury finishes on mainstream cars are a step closer, as boffins have worked out how to add a touch of class to budget trim. They"ve discovered an easy way to stick a veneer of good-quality materials to standard cabin components, so that even basic models can feel like range-toppers. The scientists - of Battelle, a technology company in Ohio, US - say the technique is carried out as the parts come out of the moulding machines.

Flour power has arrived!...

Flour power has arrived! Boffins have invented an energy-boosting additive for diesel fuel made from wheat. Scientists at the University of Wisconsin in America have developed a lab technique that extracts 90 per cent of the plant"s energy and turns it into ethanol. It"s the car that will...

It"s the car that will make Toyota cool ò€“ so says company boss Akio Toyoda. As he took the wraps off the FT-86 ò€“ the eagerly awaited replacement for the Celica ò€“ at the Tokyo Motor Show, he claimed sporty models such as the rear-driven coupé will change his firmò€™s image.

Power comes from a 200bhp 2.0-litre flat-four boxer engine sourced from Subaru ò€“ Toyotaò€™s partner in the joint venture.

As a result, the FT-86 should cover 0-60mph in less than seven seconds and hit 140mph. Under the skin is the platform from Subaruò€™s Legacy, although the car features modified springs, brakes, dampers and steering, to ensure strong handling.

The production version is set to cost around Ò£25,000 when it arrives in showrooms in 2012.
