More than 80 per cent of motorists admit they go at speeds they consider safe regardless of the legal limit.

A West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Unit study found most drivers felt their experience behind the wheel was enough to decide what speed was right. One in 10 said speeding on motorways was fine, while two per cent claimed it was OK at night. Only seven out of 3,000 questioned said they"d never disobeyed the law.
