No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. This really is a Vauxhall Tigra with a canvas roof. So has the two-seater’s folding hard-top been scrapped in favour of fabric?

No. The Sport Rouge special edition still has a metal roof – but it’s wrapped in Burgundy Red cloth. Each section is individually covered so the lid can still fold flat. “A lot of potential owners tell us they like the idea of a traditional fabric roof,” explained a spokesman. “The Sport Rouge offers the best of both worlds.”

At ÷£15,705, the entry-level Sport Rouge 1.4 is ÷£1,240 more than a standard 1.4, but features a wind deflector, cargo net, alarm and an upgraded MP3-compatible audio system. It’s also available with 1.8-litre petrol or 1.3-litre diesel powerplants.
