Prototypes are already...

Prototypes are already being tested by engineers in Belgium and Germany, and although the blue oval is reluctant to give any indication of a launch date, it"s thought the new model could be in dealerships by the end of 2006.

Likely to be called the Focus S-MAX, the newcomer will share the bodywork of the C-MAX, but will have a raised ride height and permanent four-wheel drive. Visual differences will include unique wheels and tyres, as well as black plastic wheelarch protectors and matt-finish bumpers and sill guards to protect the car in off-road situations. The 4x4 platform will also form the basis of the Focus RS hot hatch, which is expected to appear at around the same time.

Engine choices are tipped to come from Ford"s current line-up, and will include both petrol and diesel units. The oil-burner is expected to be the best seller, delivering 136bhp and boasting a six-speed manual gearbox. A 2.0-litre, 150bhp direct-injection petrol version will also be on offer. The range will cost about í‚á£1,000 more than the equivalent C-MAX when it finally goes on sale.

We"ve also heard that Ford is preparing a sporty C-MAX to go head-to-head with the Vauxhall Zafira GSi. It will have a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine, and could be on sale next summer.
