Security experts at Thatcham - the insurance industry"s independent testing organisation in Berkshire - judging the 2005 British Insurance Car Security Awards found 82 models met the tough criteria for entry. That"s one third more than last year.
In addition, 44 of the models tested reached the requirements across their entire range. Each was rated according to how well it resisted a break-in, as well as the number of anti-theft devices fitted as standard.
Citroen came top in three categories; the C3 was voted most secure supermini, while the C4 scored highest in the small family and performance car sections. Other winners included Peugeot"s 407 in the family car class and the Ford Focus C-MAX among compact people carriers.
A spokesman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders told Auto Express: "Home Office figures show how hard it is to steal new vehicles, and these awards highlight how investment from manufacturers is helping drive down crime."
Meanwhile, more drivers than ever are fitting their cars with security glass. According to Worcester-based firm Bekaert Films, which makes the special coating that strengthens vehicle windows, sales have risen by 20 per cent in the past four years.
