Shauna, 11, placed two...

Shauna, 11, placed two signs on either side of the A44 in her village of Yarnton, Oxfordshire. Each reads "Slow! children crossing!" Her mother Nicola said many drivers took little notice of the 50mph speed limit on the road.

"Shauna has to dodge the traffic," Nicola said. "It"s a dual carriageway and she has to dash across when there"s a gap, so she decided to make the warning signs."

The placards have been welcomed by other children and parents, who face the same struggle each morning. "I"m really proud of her," added Mrs Pitts.

County council engineer Paul Wilson said he appreciated the problems the road was posing, and he was looking into what could be done. "The council is assessing various requests for pedestrian crossings and lower speed limits in that area." He added that in the short term he was considering installing proper signs with a similar message.
