Stolen cars are rare...

Stolen cars are rare on the used market, but you’re more likely than ever to buy a second-hand model with outstanding finance secured against it – and the problem is only going to become worse, claim experts.

Although loan rates at franchised dealers look set to drop, more second-hand buyers will be attracted to borrowing. According to data firm Experian, 3.6 million finance agreements were taken out last year alone, and 30 per cent of second-hand searches using the company’s AutoCheck service showed the cars still had payments outstanding on them.

However, while 72 per cent of motorists are aware of the need to find out whether a vehicle is stolen before buying, only 60 per cent recognised the importance of a background check on finance.
