The upgrade means the MG TF 180 will be capable of reaching more than 140mph, and covers the 0-60mph sprint in around 6.5 seconds. A spokesman for MG Rover said: "We"re looking into making enhancements available through dealers in the future."

The launch of the TF in 2002 brought improved styling and revised suspension to MG"s roadster, but bosses feel an increase in power is needed to stay competitive. It"s also another step towards the TF-X supercar we revealed in Issue 811.

With the current TF 160 costing í‚á£20,000, the more powerful variant would be closer to í‚á£21,000. The higher-output engine could also appear in a hotter version of the ZR hatchback.
