It"s designed to be more of a soft-roader than a hardcore 4x4 - but there are currently no plans to launch the car in Europe. A Mazda insider explained: "If there"s enough interest, we might see the CX-7 here around 2007."

The IS takes on the styling themes from the recently revealed GS, with heavily sculpted features and a muscular stance. It retains the feel of a sports saloon thanks to a long nose and short rear overhang. The Lexus grille is smaller than on the current model, but its shape is echoed in the creases running up the bonnet and it"s framed by a pair of piercing headlights.
A lifestyle estate, similar to the existing Sportcross, is likely to debut later this year, probably at September"s Frankfurt Motor Show. In the battle to win over buyers of German brands, a key component will be the option of a diesel, a first for Lexus. The four-cylinder 2.2-litre unit produces 175bhp and 400Nm of torque, which should give impressive performance and the economy diesel buyers demand.
An all-new 2.5-litre direct-injection V6 powerplant will feature, too, and will be offered with a six-speed automatic gearbox with sequential operation. That engine"s appearance is likely to lead to the death of either the 2.0-litre or 3.0-litre straight-six, with the latter the favourite to be discontinued.
The IS gets more advanced technology than ever before to increase safety and stability. A radar-controlled pre-crash safety system called PCS, which detects a potential accident, will be included. Ten airbags will be fitted as standard, with an innovative double knee bag for front-seat occupants, while features such as adaptive cruise control and lighting will feature on an impressive options list. The new generation IS goes on sale in late 2005, with the diesel version to follow from 2006.
