With its roof-mounted spare wheel, side-box toolkits and sliding load bay, the MINI, called Concept Geneva, has been designed to act as a support vehicle for the Monte Carlo Rally. To commemorate the original Mini Cooper"s victory on the event in 1964, it"s painted red and white, with rally logos on the bonnet and side-boxes.

The North American Car...

The North American Car of the Year was the Chrysler 300C, while the Truck award - which includes off-roaders as well as pick-ups - went to Ford"s Escape Hybrid. Speaking after collecting his gong at Detroit, blue oval boss Bill Ford said: "Four more hybrids are on the way. There will be a version of the Fusion saloon within three years, plus two Mercury models and a Mazda Tribute within two years."

On the outside, the car gets subtle styling changes to distance it from the Golf. A revised front grille and bumper, a crease down the sides and the raised back end all help give a more classy appearance. The MkV Golf was much criticised for being too conservative compared with its predecessor, but the Bora is a bigger step forward over the current model. Underneath, the newcomer uses the hatchback"s sophisticated suspension, which will provide superior handling and ride.

The Mini Coyote GPS...

The Mini Coyote GPS speed camera locator has been a hit in France, and now itò€™s here. You get dash and visor mounts, although the unit is hard to view with the latter. The locator runs off the 12V socket or an internal battery, which claims eight hoursò€™ operation.

Set-up is simple via the coyotesystems.co.uk website, although fixed trap alerts are given from a distant 500 yards away. The small yellow display defaults to current speed and time until near a trap, when the limit also shows. Beeped alerts increase in frequency and volume when youò€™re above that speed. For mobile traps, green, amber or red LEDs light to show how likely the site is to be live.

The GSM/GPRS link ensures the Coyote updates every time it switches on, and it got all the fixed traps on our regular test route. But it missed a couple of mobiles. Plus, it didnò€™t spot any of the SPECS cameras in the M1 roadworks in Beds. Rival Road Angelò€™s Professional Connected is Ò£99 more, but is a better buy, with its larger screen, voice alerts and cheaper subscriptions.
