The current Murano is...

The current Murano is still looking fresh, but that hasn’t stopped Nissan from building an all-new model.

Set to arrive in the UK in late 2008, the crossover SUV will be based on Nissan’s new D platform. A revised version of the current car’s 3.5-litre petrol V6 unit, developing 265bhp, will initially be offered, and it’s mated to a second-generation Xtronic CVT gearbox. Within a year, a diesel powerplant – a first for the Murano range – will follow.

Elements of the distinctive looks and aggressive stance of the original Murano remain, but there are a number of significant tweaks. Up front, a menacing new grille design is flanked by wider headlights, while integrated fog-lamps fit flush with the bumper on top-spec models. A choice of either 18 or 20-inch alloy wheels fill the flared arches. At the back, there’s a new shape to the tailgate glass and LED rear lights, which take inspiration from the items seen on the firm’s smaller Qashqai crossover model.

Major changes have been made under the skin as well, with an improved suspension layout, speed-sensitive power-steering and a stiffer body structure. A choice of front or four-wheel drive is available – the latter can adjust to road conditions in a tenth-of-a-second.

As with the outgoing model, the new Murano will be packed with kit. And push-start keyless ignition, a built-in hard drive and DVD enter-tainment system, complete with nine-inch screen, 11-speaker sound system and touchscreen sat-nav, will be available on the options list.
