The GMB union says operators dodge rules by claiming their vehicles are used as part of a private contract - and are not available to the public - so don"t require a licence. Proper taxis have to undergo strict testing.

Powered by a 200bhp 2.0-litre engine, the Clio lacks the outright punch of VW"s Golf GTI and the Vauxhall Astra VXR, but Renault says the new RS"s blend of light weight and outright grip means it should deliver a seven second 0-60mph time and 150mph top speed.

Meanwhile, Italian chassis builder Dallara has revealed an updated racer, which features F1-style bodywork, for the one-make GP2 series.
