The firm, which was formed in 1886, originally made only a few hundred spark plugs a year. Today, that figure is around 300million, built mainly at the Bamberg plant in Germany.
"More than 20,000 different types of plug have been developed over the last 100 years," explained a spokesman. "And because many of the latest engines have bespoke spark plugs, the range has grown to more than 1,250 variants."
Bosch says its plugs should last between 12,000 and 18,000 miles - around 30 times longer than they did 100 years ago.
