The major recovery firms...

The major recovery firms can pinpoint your exact location simply from your mobile signal these days – but not if the battery’s dead on your handset!

That’s where the Pocket Socket steps in. It’s an emergency portable charger that should give your mobile enough juice to make a call. The maker claims that a two-minute charge will provide one-and-a-half hours of talk time and eight hours’ standby from a completely flat battery.

When we tried to boost the cell on our BlackBerry Pearl phone, the Pocket Socket couldn’t quite live up to these claims. However, it still gave us enough juice for a 10-minute call and lasted two hours on standby.

The Pocket Socket uses two AA batteries to provide the power and it comes with sockets for a huge number of common mobiles. It also has a carry case and can be used as many times as you want simply by replacing the batteries. At ?9.99, it is a useful ‘rainy day’ gadget that is worth keeping in your glovebox.
