The trophy is Mazda"s...

The trophy is Mazda"s first win on home soil for 23 years - the manufacturer last took the important prize in 1983 with the Capella saloon. At a ceremony in Tokyo last week, the MX-5 roadster was crowned the best car of 2005 by select local journalists, including Auto Express"s Japanese editor, Peter Lyon. The newcomer beat its rivals after being awarded 447 points out of a maximum of 600.

In second was the new Lexus GS executive saloon, with a score of 309, while BMW"s 3-Series was third with 212 points. The MX-5"s chief engineer Takao Kijima accepted the award on behalf of Mazda.

Meanwhile, Renault"s new Clio has been named European Car of the Year. The hatch scored 256 points to fend off the VW Passat (251), Alfa Romeo 159 (212) and BMW 3-Series (203) and clinch the title. Other models in the final line-up included the Mazda 5, Citroen C1/Peugeot 107/Toyota Aygo and Toyota"s new Yaris.
