These exclusive shots...
These exclusive shots are the first to show how close the SAIC Motor Corporation is to reintroducing a special evolution of the popular 75, with the help of British engineers from Ricardo. This long-wheelbase version, developed in the UK and set to go into production in east China, is virtually identical to the car which was built at Longbridge until April 2005.
The major difference is at the front, where the test car has new, multi-lens headlight units and a more dramatic grille. Under the skin, a new version of the 2.0-litre CDT diesel and a revised 1.8-litre turbo are expected. A rear-wheel-drive V8 is also on the cards, but unlikely to be available immediately.
Because the remnants of the Longbridge factory in the West Midlands are owned by two Chinese brands, it’s not immediately clear exactly who will take control of the Rover badge.
The famous Viking longboat logo is currently controlled by BMW. And, while it’s understood that both of MG Rover’s new parent companies – Nanjing and SAIC – have expressed an interest in buying the badge, a successful bid is far from guaranteed.
