In his annual speech to journalists in Japan, the firm"s President, Takeo Fukui, announced the hi-tech "posture control" systems that help Asimo keep its balance will soon be fitted to the company"s cars and motorcycles to improve safety, performance and ride comfort. These shots show how...

These shots show how designers have fitted bigger bumpers, multi-lens headlamps and a larger grille to help give the front end of the 2, badged Demio in its homeland, a more aggressive appearance. This look is exaggerated on high-spec models by the addition of a deeper front splitter with integrated foglights.

Mazda"s stylists have also blacked out the 2"s C-pillar to help make its side profile appear sleeker and longer. The facelift, which is finished at the rear with round-lens tail-lights and an optional roof-mounted spoiler, is designed to tempt buyers away from the svelte Honda Jazz and cute-looking Renault Modus.

Inside, the new 2 will improve on its already impressive cabin with better materials and an increased trim option range. It will retain the excellent folding seat arrangement, which offers a maximum 1,044-litre load area. The engine line-up will also remain unchanged, with 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol units, plus a 1.4-litre common-rail diesel. The new model arrives here later this year, with a minimal price increase expected over the existing car.
