Three typically unpredictable...

Three typically unpredictable tin-top thrillers produced three different winners in North Yorkshire, and saw Italian star Fabrizio Giovanardi slash Jason Plato"s series lead to a mere two points after 12 of 30 rounds.

The opening race witnessed a first BMW win in the BTCC for more than a decade. Colin Turkington made the most of his 320"s rear-wheel drive to outdrag the Honda of pole position man Gordon Shedden into the first corner, and was never headed to give Team RAC its first victory of the year. Turkington then seemed to be on target for a double success before a small error cost him the lead of the second race. Worse still, he was then forced to retire after a clash with Plato"s SEAT.

This handed a debut BTCC win to Darren Turner. Plato recovered to finish second behind his SEAT team-mate, and had stretched his championship lead to 16 points as the cars lined up for the Croft finale.

However, the former champion was out of luck in the third race, and found himself bundled down the pack to come home eighth. To make matters worse, there was no stopping Giovan÷ardi, and the Vauxhall ace took his fifth win of the year. "Fabrizio is very close now, but the next races at Oulton Park will suit our car more," said Plato. "We should forget Croft; we need to score well at Oulton." The BTCC stars head to the Cheshire track on 24 June.
