The microbes munched through the confectionery, generating hydrogen gas in the process, which could be used in fuel cell cars of the future. French firm Renault has also enjoyed consistent success with its Clio. But it was Ford"s Escort, and its successor, the Focus, that took top spot in both eras.

A spokesman for the maker said: "It"s fantastic that we"ve maintained a strong presence in the top 10 over this period." The big loser was failed Rover, which went from two entries in 1995 to none last year.
