Ten limited-edition 3-Series models are to be auctioned by BMW to mark the 10th anniversary of South Africa"s first democratic elections. Called the Democracy Cars, they"ve been signed by ex-president Nelson Mandela, with a plaque to authenticate it. All proceeds will go to his Children"s Fund, which helps underprivileged kids across the country. The cars have been built by BMW South Africa, with many suppliers donating components for free.

In his annual speech to journalists in Japan, the firm"s President, Takeo Fukui, announced the hi-tech "posture control" systems that help Asimo keep its balance will soon be fitted to the company"s cars and motorcycles to improve safety, performance and ride comfort. The technology is likely to be introduced on Honda"s sporting and luxury models first, probably from 2008. But vehicles across the range - including cars such as the Civic and Jazz - are also expected to benefit.

At the other end of the scale, Honda and Lexus are highly praised. The only European manufacturer to buck the trend is Skoda, which had excellent ratings across the board, and one model in the overall top five.
