While the prototype...

While the prototype has been proclaimed by some to be a test mule for BMW"s future sporting flagship, Auto Express has uncovered the truth. Following an investigation that spanned four countries and pooled the knowledge of the world"s most respected spy photographers, we can reveal that engineers are testing the chassis of the new Porsche Panamera.

The car shown is registered to Pirelli - the company charged with testing the tyres for the new Porsche four-door super-saloon. Another M5-bodied mule was spotted outside the Pirelli garage at the Nürburgring with a Stuttgart Porsche number plate.

Sacrificing such a costly BMW shows the lengths to which Porsche is willing to go to keep its testing secret. The newcomer"s body will actually be built by Volkswagen - painted Panamera shells will be made at VW"s Hanover plant before being delivered to the Porsche facility in Leipzig to be assembled. However, buyers shouldn"t expect the four-door to look anything like a Passat! Set to rival the forthcoming Aston Martin Rapide, the car will have a front end similar to the latest 911"s, with a sleek rear putting style ahead of practicality.

Planned for a 2009 launch, the new model is likely to be offered with both rear and four-wheel drive.
