Meet the latest British hero, the MMI Avocet. The sports car has a light body and a chassis developed by Ray Mallock – the man who prepares Chevrolet’s World Touring race cars. DaimlerChrysler has developed a way to beam map data directly into cars, rather than needing the owner to install the information via CD-ROM or an Internet download. Transmitters would be located at petrol stations and could provide updates when filling up. They would also relay data on roadworks, closures and diversions.

Sirens are being removed from all non-pursuit patrol cars by Kent Police. Cops with only basic vehicle training will have to observe speed limits when attending incidents as part of an initiative designed to reduce the number of collisions involving officers. If successful, the policy could be extended nationwide. Meanwhile, when attending a road traffic accident all police will now have to record whether the driver was on work business.
